Dear parents,
I hope you had a holy and happy Easter and vacation! After the Resurrection, Jesus' disciples went out to tell the Good News. Our Good News is that we are preparing PowerPoint presentations in small groups on the planets. Also, we are going on a field trip to the Adler Planetarium next Monday, Apr. 23. We will see the exhibits and watch a star show called The Earth and Moon. Yeh! Students should wear their gym uniform that day, even though it is a Monday. The cost will be covered by a donation from Mr. Zangrelli.
Tomorrow we will have our spelling bee to see who goes to the regional (deanery) spelling bee on Friday, Apr. 27. Two winners and an alternate will go.
Have a good week!
Love, Ms. Sullivan

Dear parents and third graders,
As you well know, it is standardized test week. Thank you for helping your child relax, get enough sleep, and feel good about himself or herself.
After test in the afternoons we are doing a unit from the Columban Mission education program called Journey with Jesus. The third grade theme is respect and dignity. It emphasizes human rights and responsibilities. We will be learning about Catholic social teaching on human dignity and the worth of each person. We will study the UN Declaration on rights of persons, too. The third graders will learn a song and see video clips of missionaries in different parts of the world.
Also, our students have received a spelling list today that is for a school council-wide spelling bee. Each week we will practice with a spelling bee in the classroom. Two students and an alternate will be chosen for the council spelling bee on Apr. 27. Do not panic that the list is so long. There is no requirement to participate. However, I know our students already know some words and are up to the challenge of learning more. We will use the spelling bee lists instead of the "challenge word" lists for the challenge spelling test points. You will find the first sets on the web www.spellingcity.com already. We now have a "Premium Membership" so there are more games available, practice tests, etc. Away we go! We will try it out in class one afternoon this week.
Happy International Women's Day on Thursday! Next week we begin reading a book on how women won the right to vote in the United States. Interesting!
Blessings, Ms. Sullivan

Happy Mardi Gras or Carnaval!
Dear parents and third graders,
The children will attend the Ash Wednesday service tomorrow at 12 noon. Feel free to join us in the church.
Many children are coming to school with a bad cold. Please keep your child home while he or she is still contagious (the first 2 days). Also, we are DESPERATE FOR TISSUES (Kleenex or other types). We have 2 boxes left and then. . . we will be using paper towels. I am begging you to each send one box of tissues for the class. I will be marking who does contribute again. Thank you!!!
On Thursday we will have our English test covering pronouns, contractions, and the homonyms there, their, and they're. Please do practice problems and learn the difference between subject, object, and possessive pronouns. See pp. 214-229 and the extra practice problems on pp. 232-235.
We will have our usual Spelling Test on Friday Unit 26. The Science Test on Ch. 5 is Mar. 1.
Tomorrow the students will bring home their Social Studies test (pp. 1-2) and test practice (pp. 3-6). If the test practice problems helped the grade of the student, I averaged them in to give a better score. If not, they only count as a worksheet. Children who correct their answers with a colored pencil may receive 1/2 credit for their new answers.
Thanks! Ms. Sullivan

Happy New Year! We've had 3 days of school already, so we are warmed up and working. It was nice to see the students again.
This coming week is the last week of the quarter. We will be having several tests. Today we had our math tests. Tomorrow there will be a Social Studies test on using maps, timelines, and pictures to answer questions. Wednesday's test is a reading teston the vocabulary and content of the story Dogzilla, reading and identifying sounds of y and consonant digraphs, and telling reality from fantasy. On Thursday we will have a Science test comparing habitats in Ch. 3. Friday we will have the usual spelling test on Unit 18.
Our next math fact test is on X2. Please practice each night. The children didn't score very high on -3 and -4, so please keep practicing all subtraction facts, because many more tests will come up.
Next Monday we don't have school due to the holiday for Martin Luther King. By the end of the week will be reading his biography. All month long we will be discussing nonviolence and building peace and relationships.
Have a good week!
Peace, Ms. Sullivan

Dear third graders and parents,
Today tests and other corrected papers are going home. You will receive a progress notice if any grade averages a C- or below. The Native American projects were great. Thank you for helping your child express his or her creativity.
We reviewed our story map for the book Sarah, Plain and Tall today. Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will have a test on the book. Vocabulary words you should review are: plain, prairie, bonnet, overalls, pesky, and mild-mannered.
We will also have a test in Religion on Wednesday.. Please study the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego. Study the sheet on the Advent wreath. Know the people and events of the Nativity story.
There will be no Spelling or Math tests nor reading log this week.
The students who may bring treats for a Christmas celebration on Wednesday afternoon are Jocelyne, Imanol, Brian, Eduardo, Maya, and Saul.
All third graders should bring their recorders to school Monday through Wednesday. I will bring them to the church for the performance. Please be in the church for the Christmas show on Wednesday evening by 6:15 p.m. Students may wear whatever dress up clothes find appropriate.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Blessings, Ms. Sullivan

Dear third graders and parents,
Happy feast of the Virgen de Guadalupe!
Welcome to our two new students! Our class is happy to receive you. Welcome to the St. PIus V family!
Christmas is coming, and we are practicing for the Christmas program. The students should arrive on Dec. 21 at 6:15 p.m. in the church. Since we are practicing almost every day, the students should bring their recorders (flutes) to school each day, too.
Thursday is the Christmas party that the eighth graders put on for the school. This is a fundraiser for the eighth grade, so game tickets sell for 25 cents. Snacks will also be sold. Third grade attends the party in the morning.
Meanwhile, we will continue with work and tests. Some students are slipping behind in subtraction and multiplication timed tests. I suggest getting some flash cards for Christmas and to try to get ahead. Of course, writing the facts out is also a good exercise.
On Tuesday we will have a reading test. The students should be able to use the vocabulary from the story Across the Wide Dark Sea: The Mayflower Journey PB 3.2 p. 61 and Dancing Rainbows PB 3.1 p. 111.
They should be able to read new passages and pick out the main ideas and details. Students should also be able to use story clues to make an inference (a logical guess about something that is implied but not said.)
On Wednesday we will have the math timed tests for subtracting by 2 or finding a difference of 2. We will also have the written math assessment.
On Friday, we will have the Unit 17 Spelling test. The children are doing really well in spelling with both the regular words, bonus words, and challenge words. The challenge word test is for those who want an extra challenge, but it does not go on the report card. Both lists are on www.spellingcity.com each week. This website can also help you know how to pronounce and know the meaning of the word.
The Native American projects were really great, and the children explained a lot to the other students who came to see them. The photos from our exciting field trip to the Field Museum are now on the website. Thank you to our chaperones!

Dear third graders and families,
Thank you for coming to our conferences. Thank you also for your continued support of your child and the educational process. We know a Catholic education makes a difference because of the teamwork and values we practice.
Speaking of practice, since this is a short week and we will be going to the circus on Friday, our spelling test will not be until next Monday, Nov. 21. Also the Math Written Assessment will be Monday. However, on Thursday there will be a one-minute test on subtraction from 10.
Today we used our "see notes" to plan out the steps for constructing our Native American projects. Feel free to move the dates on the physical part of the project to fit your family's schedule. They are meant to be helpful.
We will be using the computers this week for research on the Native Americans and on the animals of the circus. We also will be working on writing our paragraphs from our notes. Hopefully each child will come well rested to work on writing so it doesn't need to be finished at home.
Love, Ms. Sullivan

Dear third graders and parents,
Please bring in your pictures or other contributions for the Day of the Dead ofrenda we will construct in our room. Thanks to Vincent Aguirre we already have some nice estampadas de papel picado.
We are participating in classes about Our City from the Junior Achievement program with Mr. Al Cruz on Thursdays. Already we have learned about city zones, how to read architectural blueprints using scaled models, and where to place various kinds of buildings within city zones. We look forward to three more lessons from Mr. Cruz.
Today we took our Math Written Assessment. Besides our Spelling test on Friday, we will have a Religion Chapter 3 test on Thursday. Be sure to study the "faith words" in Chapter 3. The children need to be able to name and explain a devotion of Mary. For example, the children could explain how to pray the rosary, a litany of Mary, bringing roses to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, or pray the Angelus. Maybe you have special devotions to Mary in your family. Talk about them (or do them) together, and the children can share in class.
This is Red Ribbon Week, so we are learning about how to stay healthy and away from the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Along with this we will choose good activities and learn to express our feelings appropriately!
Last Monday we received a helpful lesson from Ms. Jaycee of the Executive Functions program on how to follow directions! We use the CUCC method.

Dear third graders and parents,
Here you see some of the thrid graders learning about bacteria and viruses from the eighth graders last week. We also met with our seventh grade book buddies to start reading The Stories Julian Tells. Thanks to the older students who keep us motivated to learn so many good skills!
Thanks also go to our chaperones who took us to the Day of the Dead exhibit at the National Museum of Mexican Art. We will be creating our own ofrenda in our classroom at the end of the month, so I invite you to start looking for photos or mementos to honor your loved ones who have passed away.

Tests and Events of the Week
Our next math fact test is on +3 and +4. Some children are not able to complete the 25 problems in one minute yet, so please get out flash cards or write the problems out to practice. The test for the facts will be tomorrow, Wednesday.
Also on Wednesday we will have a school Mass. The third and fourth graders will be reading the prayers, and bringing up the gifts and singing as the leaders of the Mass. You are invited to pray with us in the church at 1:30 p.m. The Mass is to pray in solidarity with indigenous peoples.
Thursday is our regular written math test and a Religion test on Chapter 2. Study the vocabulary terms and be ready to give examples of God as Creator and as Divine Providence. We will also have a Social Studies test and Spelling test on Friday. Study the Hispanic Heritage booklet of our work for the Social Studies test.

Hello third graders and parents,
I am happy we are getting into a rhythm of working now. We will take our first field trip to the National Museum of Mexican Art on October 6. The guided tour costs $4. 50 per child. Please sign the permission slip and return it with cash or a check made out to St. Pius V School. I'm sorry for the late notice. It was the only date we could get.
This week we have an English test on Thursday. The test will cover Ch. 1 on writing complete and correct sentences. The children need to be able to identify incomplete sentences (fragments) and make them into complete sentences. They need to label the four types of sentences (statements .) (questions ?) (exclamations !) (commands .) and put the correct end marks on each one. They will also correct run-on sentences. In your text study pp. 32-39 and pp. 44-45.
Also, as usual, we will have the Spelling Test on Unit 5 on Friday.
Thank you for your patience with the worms. They are growing and one has already turned into a pupa. So there is hope!
Tomorrow, Wednesday, I will do a red homework folder check. Have you seen the words "Keep at home?" Those papers should be kept at home in a box (or discarded if you don't have space).
Thanks, Dana

We celebrate Central American and Mexican Independence days with you! Friday afternoon the children will be entertained with mariachis playing here at school! Various lessons in the coming weeks will integrate and show our pride in Latino culture.

They will answer questions about the story Lost and Found, fill in sentences with vocabulary words, and read a new passage to answer questions. Friday we have our regular spelling test.
As the weather gets cooler, please be aware of the school uniform code. School sweaters are to be worn on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. They are plain red or navy blue. School sweatshirts may be worn on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
I look forward to seeing you Wednesday, Sept 21 at 6 p.m. for the parent back to school night. Meet in the basement of the church.

We celebrate Central American and Mexican Independence days with you! Friday afternoon the children will be entertained with mariachis playing here at school! Various lessons in the coming weeks will integrate and show our pride in Latino culture.
Of course there are always tests for which to prepare. Today we took the Math Facts test of sums of 10.
Wednesday is the Math Written Assessments test. Always look over the homework papers to see that the students know each type of problem. On Thursday the children will take the reading test.
Pace et bene,
Ms. Sullivan

Welcome to another week! Did you know Ms. Sullivan loves gardens? We are studying plant and animal life cycles this quarter. If you have special knowledge or experience in this area, we would love if you would share it!
We took a practice math test Friday. Those who earned an A will keep it. Those who didn't will take a similar test on Thursday. So please practice the kind of problems you missed and correct your test with colored pencil. Your parents should sign the test after you (the student) have corrected it.
Other tests will be:
Math Facts -0 and -1 and differences of 0 and 1: Tuesday
Spelling Unit 3: Friday
Religion Chapter 1: Friday
Just a warning: Our worms will need care over the weekend. They will go home and should be placed somewhere out of little children's and pets way. Keep them out of the sun. Then bring them back to school Monday. Thank you!
Have a good week,
Ms. Sullivan

Dear third graders and parents,
We are getting into the swing of things now in our second week of school. Thank you for coming to school on time and completing your homework so well! Please remember that the students need to come to school well rested on Monday. They had a hard time concentrating yesterday.
In Phonics we will have a test on reading and writing short vowel words on Wednesday. Thursday there will be a quiz in Social Studies on the basic rules and procedures we have learned for the classroom and around safety. On Friday we will have our regular spelling test.
Wednesday you will receive a folder with the recent tests inside. Please sign each one after your child has corrected the problems on the math and reading tests with a colored pencil for homework. You will see that reviewing the homework in math can pay off in taking the tests.
In Religion we are studying the Trinity, the Bible as the Word of God, and what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns. We have a really nice class of students and are learning to work together.
Have a good week!
Ms. Sullivan
PS. Once the class has all returned their forms giving the school permission to photograph our students, I will be taking pictures to put on the class website.

Dear third graders and families,
Happy beginnings! I hope you had a relaxing summer. Perhaps you went to
the aquarium or got away from the heat at the beach?
I am so happy to see all the new smiling faces. We are starting work steadily. This first week is important for setting routines, beginning basic work and doing pretests. Here are some things you should know:
On Friday we will have our first Math test and Spelling Test. Your child will be learning our new system of writing in the homework and study planner in order to keep organized.
Students are allowed to bring water bottles (only if
they have water in them) to our room.
The Students will be dismissed each day of this week at
11:30. I would like to meet the people who will be picking up your
children.
Most Mondays or Tuesdays you will receive a letter from me. It will say which tests we are having, what vocabulary words to study, and other news. The newsletter will also be posted on our class website www.stpius3.weebly.com. You can also
study for spelling on www.spellingcity.com. After going to the site, enter my name, Dana Sullivan, to search by teacher.
That's it for now!
Love, Ms. Sullivan

Dear Parents and third graders,
Thank you for the privilege of teaching your children! They are wonderful kids, and I will miss them.
Thank you to all the parents who spent so much time helping their children with the homework and studies.
Today we are sending home Lexile reports. These were based on your child's Terra Nova success. A librarian or book store clerk can help you find more books at your child's reading level. Of course your child may have advanced a little beyond this since March! I am offering a reading challenge for a prize. Read 3 books or more on the list and write up a 5 sentence summary. You will earn a prize in August when you give it to me!
Have a relaxing summer, and don't forget to keep practicing and learning new things!
I love you!
